My classes in a nutshell.
English 9 and 10 Expectations:It’s my job to transition ninth graders into high school curriculum and to get tenth graders ready for their MCAP exams. I structure my English classes similarly to help each student achieve their best in standards dealing with reading, writing, language, speaking, and applying that knowledge to everyday life.
For example, some daily and weekly routines include: In both my English 9 and 10 classes every Wednesday is a Word Wednesday lesson where they receive 6-8 words a week to review and learn. Every group of words is rooted from a Latin root to touch on cross-curricular knowledge and keep the words related. That following day, after the class receives a new group of words students are responsible for creating sentences for each word for homework due on that Thursday. Then that following Wednesday the class will have a vocabulary quiz on those words and their Latin root. My English 9 classes focus on diverse units that incorporate texts such as Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Odyssey. |
English 10 and English 11:However, like my English 10, conducts literature circles every Monday: A Lit. Circle day. This a day to focus on reading for about 30 minutes and for students to discuss novels they’re reading for enjoyment or related to the curriculum. Normally student books will make connections in genre, theme, plot, and characterization to the core texts we’re reading in class. Accelerated English 10 is similar with a little more speed and vigor.
I use a multitude of resources for students to review their work, deadlines, homework, class handouts and assignments from Remind, Edmodo, Google Classroom, Schoology, CommonLit, NoRedInk, NewsELA, and various online resources for grammar and assessment. Whereas my English 10 students study British and World Literature and read more complex texts such as the epic of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, Macbeth, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and Lord of the Flies. English 11 students will focus on American Literature and Drama with plays and texts such as: The Kite Runner, Hamlet, The Secret Life of Bees, The Crucible, Great Gatsby, and many more. |
I do my best to keep both grades engaged, challenged, and constantly creating.
Their learning is what is most important to me. Thanks for being a part of my classroom for a few minutes!
