My teaching philosophy is driven by the idea that everyone can learn. With that in mind, I want to inspire my students to embrace that power with their own knowledge by demonstrating instruction, allowing those students to learn from experience, being creative and encouraging creativity, and learning together to create a strong classroom environment.
STUDENTS LEARN BY EXAMPLE: The teacher serves as the authority and motivator of the classroom; the author of the classroom who is tasked to write a story for each student – their prelude of learning for life. An educator must help students reach their own conclusions by using problem solving techniques and skills. Scaffolding instruction incorporates activities that are just beyond the level of what the learner can do alone. Making activities interactive and creative allows students to develop far beyond the realms of English too. Giving students a sense of freedom and expression is important for their own imagination and learning process. An instructor provides the scaffolds so that the learner can accomplish the tasks. Part of a teacher’s responsibility is to encourage students to be active participants in their own attainment of knowledge, their own stories.
STUDENTS LEARN BY EXPERIENCE: Children are more apt to construct knowledge at a deeper level when engaged in hands-on experiences that stimulate the senses. The classroom comes alive with self-discovery when there is ACTIVE learning where both teacher and students are involved. I’m an advocate of teacher participation as much as student participation. I think students will have a better understanding of tasks if the teacher scaffolds the assignment and does it with them. I plan lessons to arouse curiosity and push the student to a higher level of thinking as well as demonstrate direct connections between the classroom and everyday life. Students should be encouraged to learn by actively participating and to interact with one another. Students and teachers that work together generate feelings of curiosity, confidence, and success.
TEACHERS LEARN THROUGH COLLABORATION: Collaboration is essential between administration, technicians, aides, parents, etc. Planning with all these people in mind as well as the student body will help teachers learn every day and keep their lessons fresh and continually improving. Thematic planning is beneficial as well as incorporating technologies, electronic resources, and other teacher involvement. Correlating an assignment between two different subjects may seem complicated but students will benefit from the interdisciplinary interaction and opportunity to experience learning in two different mediums by two different mentors. However, not only is the student learning but the teachers as well, from each other and the connection in two different classrooms.
